Why travelers choose this itinerary

This is the classic grand loop of Turkey, the route the big tour companies have sold to Americans for decades, rebuilt as a private trip. Instead of a coach of 40 strangers, it is your party, your guide and your driver, with stops when you want them and no shopping stops you did not ask for.

The route covers almost every chapter of Turkish history: Troy and Ephesus, the Roman spa of Hierapolis, the theater of Aspendos, the Seljuk monuments of Konya, the rock churches of Cappadocia and the Ottoman palaces of Istanbul. A free day on the Mediterranean in Antalya breaks up the journey, and all evenings are yours to eat where you like.

Highlights

  • Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar
  • Anzac Cove and the Gallipoli memorials, and a ferry across the Dardanelles
  • Troy and its nine layers of settlement
  • Lunch with local women in a village near Troy
  • Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary
  • Hierapolis and the white terraces of Pamukkale
  • Two nights in Antalya, with its Roman harbor and Kaleiçi old town
  • The Roman theater of Aspendos and the Mevlana Museum in Konya
  • Cappadocia's underground city, Göreme Open Air Museum and fairy chimneys
  • The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Atatürk's mausoleum in Ankara

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1Arrive in Istanbul

Your driver meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to rest after the flight or take a first walk through the neighborhood. In the evening, your guide stops by to go over the route and answer questions about the two weeks ahead. Send us your flight details when you book so the pickup matches your arrival.

    Istanbul Meals: None

  2. Day 2Istanbul's Old City

Start at the Hippodrome, heart of Byzantine Constantinople, where an Egyptian obelisk has stood since the 4th century. See the Blue Mosque and its minarets and step inside Hagia Sophia, nearly 1,500 years old. Spend the late morning in Topkapı Palace, where the Ottoman sultans lived and governed, then lose yourself in the covered lanes of the Grand Bazaar.

  3. Day 3Gallipoli and the Dardanelles

Drive west along the Sea of Marmara to the Gallipoli peninsula, where the 1915 campaign shaped the national stories of Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. Çanakkale Meals: B

  4. Day 4Troy and a Village Lunch, on to İzmir

Explore Troy, where excavations have uncovered nine cities built one on top of another, and see the replica of the wooden horse. Continue to a village in the hills for lunch with local women, who bake bread and cook with produce from their own gardens. Drive south to İzmir and check in to your hotel by the sea.

    İzmir Meals: B, L

  5. Day 5Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary

Walk through Ephesus, one of the great cities of the Roman Mediterranean, past the facade of the Library of Celsus and down the marble street toward its old harbor. İzmir Meals: B

  6. Day 6Drive to Pamukkale

    Pamukkale Meals: B

  7. Day 7Hierapolis and Pamukkale, on to Antalya

Walk through Hierapolis, the Roman spa city where the ancients came to bathe and heal, and see its theater and necropolis. 8. Day 8Free Day in Antalya

A day at your own pace on the Turkish Riviera. Wander the winding lanes of Kaleiçi, the old town, with its Ottoman houses and Roman harbor, swim at Konyaaltı or Lara beach, or relax at the hotel. If you would like to see more, we can arrange an optional boat trip along the coast or a guided walk of the old town.

FAQ

Is this tour private?

Yes. Only your party travels, with a private guide and driver on the dates you choose. Unlike coach tours of 40 or more, you set the pace, choose where to linger and skip any stop you like. Prices are per person and decrease as your party grows.

Why are most meals not included?

Breakfast is included every day, and there is one village lunch near Troy. We leave the other meals free on purpose: Turkish food is one of the joys of the trip, and private travelers tell us they prefer choosing their own restaurants. Your guide is happy to recommend places.

How long are the drives?

The loop covers about 3,000 km, so several days include four to six hours on the road, with stops for photos, coffee and lunch. Your private vehicle makes the drives far more comfortable than a coach, and you can stop whenever you want.

Can we shorten the drives by flying?

Yes. The Ankara to Istanbul leg on Day 13 can be replaced by a domestic flight, or we can fly you from Cappadocia to Istanbul and skip Ankara. Ask us when you book and we will adjust the price.

Is the hot air balloon ride included?

No, it is an optional extra on the morning of Day 11. Balloons fly at sunrise and depend on the weather. Tell us when you book and we will reserve it.

How much does this tour cost per person?

For two travelers the price is $4,795 per person in US dollars. It falls to $3,595 per person for a party of six or more, and a solo traveler pays $9,060 because the guide and vehicle are reserved for one party. These are 2026 prices and cover everything listed under What's included.

What do children pay, and can we upgrade to 5-star hotels?

Children up to 1 year old travel free. Children aged 2 to 6 pay $2,400 to $1,800 depending on group size and count toward the group size. Upgrading every night of the tour to 5-star hotels costs $730 per adult.

How do payment and cancellation work?

You reserve with a 30% deposit by card in US dollars, processed securely by Stripe; for two travelers on this tour that is about $2,880. The balance is charged automatically 30 days before travel. Cancel up to 30 days before your start date and you get a full refund, including the deposit.
