Turkey for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break: A Guide for Americans
Quick answer: Turkey works well for American school and work holidays. Thanksgiving week is quiet, cool and good value, with Istanbul highs around 61°F. Christmas to New Year is festive in Istanbul and snowy in Cappadocia, and it is the busiest week of the low season. Spring break in March and April brings mild weather, Istanbul’s tulips and green countryside. Check Turkish holiday dates before you book, because Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı fill hotels and roads.
Turkey over Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 in 2026 and November 25 in 2027. A week built around it is one of the best-value times to see Turkey. Crowds at Hagia Sophia, Ephesus and Pamukkale are low, hotel rates drop, and the light is beautiful.
What to expect in late November (long-term averages from the Turkish State Meteorological Service):
- Istanbul: highs around 61°F (16°C), lows around 50°F (10°C), with more rain than in October
- Cappadocia: highs around 53°F (12°C), nights near freezing at 36°F (2°C)
- Ephesus and the Aegean: highs around 66°F (19°C), pleasant for walking the ruins
Days are short, with sunset before 5 pm in Istanbul, so a private tour helps: your guide plans the day around the light instead of a group schedule. A 6- or 7-day trip fits a Thanksgiving week with two vacation days. See the 7-Day Turkey Highlights tour or the 6-Day Istanbul and Cappadocia tour.
Turkey does not celebrate Thanksgiving, but some international hotels in Istanbul offer a holiday dinner. Ask us and we will check what is available near your hotel.
Turkey over Christmas and New Year
Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, so December 25 is a normal working day. It is still a good time to visit. Istanbul’s shopping streets and hotels put up lights for New Year, and December 31 is the big celebration, with fireworks over the Bosphorus.
- Istanbul: highs around 53°F (12°C) in December, 49°F (10°C) in January
- Cappadocia: highs around 43°F (6°C) and nights below freezing; snow on the fairy chimneys is likely from December to February
- Hot air balloons: they fly in winter on clear, calm mornings, but more flights are cancelled for wind and snow than in other seasons, so keep two mornings free in Cappadocia
Christmas services are held in Istanbul’s Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant churches, and we can help you find one. For travelers interested in the story of Saint Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop behind Santa Claus, his church at Myra (Demre) is on the Mediterranean coast near Antalya; ask us about adding it.
The week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest of the winter season. Book hotels and domestic flights by October if you can.
Turkey for spring break
Most US spring breaks fall in March or early April. In 2027, Western Easter is on March 28.
- March: Istanbul highs around 54°F (12°C), Cappadocia around 51°F (10°C). Quiet sites and low prices, but bring a warm layer.
- April: Istanbul highs around 63°F (17°C) and the Istanbul Tulip Festival in the city’s parks. One of our favorite months for a first trip.
Spring break is a good time for families and for church groups following Paul’s journeys and the Seven Churches of Revelation, because the Aegean is mild and green. For student or family groups, see church and group travel.
Summer vacation, Memorial Day and Labor Day
June to August is high season. It is hot on the Aegean coast, with July highs around 92°F (33°C) in İzmir, and busy at the big sites. If summer is your only window, start sightseeing early, rest at midday and add a few days on the coast. Early June (around Memorial Day) and September (around Labor Day) are cooler and calmer than July and August.
Turkish holidays to check before you book
Turkey’s two religious holidays move about 11 days earlier each year because they follow the lunar calendar. During them, domestic flights, buses and resort hotels fill up and some museums change their hours.
- Ramazan Bayramı (end of Ramadan): March 9 to 11, 2027. Ramadan itself begins February 8, 2027; sightseeing runs normally during the month.
- Kurban Bayramı: May 16 to 19, 2027.
- Republic Day: October 29 every year, with celebrations and flags across the country.
Our private tours run on all of these dates. We plan around closures and book hotels early for holiday weeks.
