10 Days in Turkey: The Best Itinerary for a First Trip

Quick answer: The best 10-day Turkey itinerary for a first trip is 3 nights in Istanbul, 3 nights in Cappadocia, 2 nights near Ephesus and 1 night at Pamukkale, linked by three short domestic flights and a 3-hour drive. Ten days lets you see the same four places as a 7-day trip without rushing, with time for a balloon flight, the Ihlara Valley and Priene or Aphrodisias.

The closest of our tours to this route is the 12-Day Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale tour, which adds a third Cappadocia day and Priene, Miletus and Didyma. We can shorten it to 10 days.

Days 1 to 3: Istanbul

Three nights is the right amount for a first visit. Day 2 covers the old city’s big four: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace. Day 3 is for the Grand Bazaar, the Süleymaniye Mosque and a Bosphorus cruise between Europe and Asia. If you land in the afternoon on Day 1, keep it to dinner and a short walk.

Days 4 to 6: Cappadocia

Fly from Istanbul to Kayseri or Nevşehir, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Three nights gives you two full days and a spare morning for the balloons, which are cancelled on windy days. See the Göreme Open-Air Museum’s painted rock churches, walk among the fairy chimneys at Paşabağ, go underground at Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu, and spend a day in the Ihlara Valley. Stay in a cave hotel.

Days 7 and 8: Ephesus

Fly from Cappadocia to İzmir (usually via Istanbul) and drive about an hour to Kuşadası or Selçuk. Give Ephesus a full morning, including the Terrace Houses, then visit the House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John. With time left, add Priene and Miletus.

Day 9: Aphrodisias and Pamukkale

Drive inland about three hours, stopping at Aphrodisias, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in Turkey. Reach Pamukkale in the afternoon and walk the white travertines barefoot, then explore Hierapolis and its theater at sunset. Staying the night means you see the terraces without day-trip crowds.

Day 10: Home

Fly from Denizli to Istanbul in the morning and connect to your flight to the US. Leave at least three hours between flights, or spend a last night in Istanbul if your flight leaves early.

Two other ways to spend 10 days

Is 10 days enough for Turkey?

Ten days is enough for Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale at a comfortable pace. It is not enough to add the Turquoise Coast or southeast Turkey as well. For those, see our 2-week Turkey itinerary or how many days you need in Turkey. With only a week, use our 7-day itinerary.
