Flights from the US to Turkey: Nonstop Routes, Flight Times and Time Difference
Quick answer: Most Americans fly to Turkey on Turkish Airlines, which runs nonstop flights to Istanbul Airport (IST) from about 14 US airports, including New York JFK, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami. Expect about 10 hours from the East Coast and 13 to 14 hours from the West Coast. Turkey is 7 hours ahead of New York in summer and 8 hours ahead in winter. Plan a light first day so jet lag does not cost you a full sightseeing day.
Which US cities have nonstop flights to Istanbul?
Turkish Airlines is the main nonstop carrier between the United States and Turkey. As of October 2026 it lists nonstop service to Istanbul Airport from these US airports:
- East Coast: New York JFK, Newark, Boston, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami
- Midwest and South: Chicago O’Hare, Detroit, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth
- West: Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle
Schedules change by season, and some routes are not daily. Check the current timetable on the airline’s site before you plan dates. If you live elsewhere, a one-stop itinerary through one of these gateways, or through a European hub such as Frankfurt, Munich, London or Amsterdam, is usually easy to find.
Turkish Airlines is a member of Star Alliance, so you can usually earn and spend United MileagePlus miles on its flights. US airlines mostly reach Istanbul with a connection in Europe on their own or partner flights.
How long is the flight?
Nonstop flights from the East Coast take about 10 hours. From Chicago and Texas it is closer to 11 to 12 hours, and from the West Coast about 13 to 14 hours. The flight home is usually one to two hours longer because you fly against the prevailing winds.
Most US departures leave in the evening and land in Istanbul the next afternoon or evening local time. Tell us your arrival time and we will keep your first day light.
What is the time difference?
Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year and does not change its clocks. That means:
- Eastern Time: Turkey is 7 hours ahead in summer (EDT) and 8 hours ahead in winter (EST).
- Central Time: 8 hours ahead in summer, 9 in winter.
- Mountain Time: 9 hours ahead in summer, 10 in winter.
- Pacific Time: 10 hours ahead in summer, 11 in winter.
Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen?
Istanbul has two airports. Flights from the US land at Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side, about 45 to 75 minutes by road from the old city depending on traffic. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is mainly used by low-cost and regional airlines. If you book a separate ticket into Istanbul, make sure it lands at the airport your tour pickup expects.
Flying on to Cappadocia, Ephesus or Pamukkale
Turkey is big, so most multi-city tours use one or two short domestic flights:
- Cappadocia: Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV), about 1 hour 20 minutes from Istanbul
- Ephesus: İzmir (ADB), about 1 hour 10 minutes
- Pamukkale: Denizli (DNZ)
- Antalya and the Turquoise Coast: Antalya (AYT)
On our tours that include flights, we book these domestic legs for you and they are part of the price. If you want to fly straight from the US to İzmir or Kayseri on one ticket via Istanbul, that is often possible too; tell us and we will start the tour where you land.
Our tips for the flight from the US
- Plan a light first day. An overnight eastbound flight with a 7 to 11 hour time change is tiring. Arrive a day before the busiest sightseeing, or let us keep the arrival day to a pickup and a short walk.
- Book the long-haul flight first, then the tour dates. Send us your flight numbers and we will match the pickup to your arrival time.
- Check your passport, not a visa. US citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days, but the passport must be valid at least six months from arrival. See Turkey visa rules for US citizens.
- Pack for the season. Cappadocia is much colder than Istanbul from November to March. See the best time to visit Turkey.
- Read the current advisory. Our page on whether Turkey is safe for Americans explains the State Department rating.
Tours that start at Istanbul Airport
