Turkey Shore Excursions for Cruise Passengers: Istanbul and Kuşadası (Ephesus)

Quick answer: Turkey’s two big cruise stops are Istanbul (ships dock at Galataport in Karaköy) and Kuşadası, the port for Ephesus, about 20 km (12 miles) and roughly 30 minutes away by road. Both work well as a private full-day shore excursion: in Istanbul you can see Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and a bazaar; from Kuşadası you can see Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis. The two tours below are run by our Istanbul partner Bosporus Cruise, are private to your group, and are refunded in full if your ship is delayed or skips the port.

We plan multi-day private tours, so most of our travelers arrive by plane. But many Americans see Turkey for the first time from a cruise ship, often on an Eastern Mediterranean or Greek Isles itinerary. This page covers what you can realistically do in one port day, and what to book.

Istanbul shore excursion: Old City and bazaar (full day)

Ships in Istanbul dock at Galataport, in Karaköy on the European side. There is no tender: you walk off the ship through an underground terminal onto the waterfront. The Old City (Sultanahmet) is across the Golden Horn, about 3.5 km away. The T1 tram from Tophane, a short walk from the terminal, gets you there in about 15 minutes, which is usually faster than a car in traffic.

The tour: From Istanbul Port: Full-Day Old City Tour & Shopping Experience

  • Length: 6–7 hours, daily
  • Meeting point: your guide waits at the Galataport terminal exit with a name sign
  • Route: tram to the Old City, Hagia Sophia, Sultanahmet Square (Hippodrome), Topkapı Palace, lunch break, then the Grand Bazaar or the Spice Bazaar, and back to the port (our one-day Old City plan explains the order)
  • Included: private licensed English-speaking guide, tram tickets, return to the ship on time
  • Not included: entrance fees (paid on site), lunch, tips
  • Price: listed in euros per person on the booking page; children under 4 go free

Good to know: Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays and the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays, so the guide will adjust the day if your port call falls on one of those days. Hagia Sophia is a working mosque: women need a headscarf, and shoulders and knees should be covered for everyone. Foreign visitors pay an entrance fee and visit the upper gallery.

If your cruise starts or ends in Istanbul, you have more than a day. Our 4-day private Istanbul tour works as a pre- or post-cruise stay, and the 3-day Cappadocia trip from Istanbul adds the balloon landscape with a 75-minute flight each way.

Kuşadası shore excursion: Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis (full day)

Kuşadası is a resort town on the Aegean coast, and the cruise port is right in the town center. Ephesus is about 20 km away (around 30 minutes by road) and the House of the Virgin Mary is about 10 minutes beyond it. You cannot walk to either from the ship, so you need a tour, a taxi or a minibus. A private tour is the easiest way to be sure of getting back in time.

The tour: From Kusadasi Port: Full-Day Ephesus, Virgin Mary House and Temple of Artemis Tour

  • Length: about 8 hours including transfers, daily
  • Meeting point: your guide and driver wait at the Kuşadası cruise terminal exit (hotel pickup in Kuşadası also possible)
  • Route: İsa Bey Mosque, ancient Ephesus (Library of Celsus, Temple of Hadrian, Fountain of Trajan, the Great Theater of Acts 19), lunch, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis. The day also includes a carpet cooperative and a leather showroom.
  • Included: private air-conditioned vehicle, licensed English-speaking guide, entrance fees with pre-bought tickets, lunch, return to the ship on time
  • Not included: the Terrace Houses ticket at Ephesus (optional, paid on site; see are the Terrace Houses worth it?), drinks, tips
  • Price: listed in euros per person on the booking page; children under 4 go free and ages 4–6 pay half

Good to know: expect about 2 miles (3 km) of walking on uneven marble and stone. In summer, Ephesus is hot and crowded by late morning, so an early start helps. Read our Ephesus guide for what to see inside the site, and the Paul in Ephesus post if you are visiting for the biblical history.

Some cruise lines dock in İzmir instead of Kuşadası. Ephesus is then about an hour and a quarter away by road, which makes the day tighter; ask us before you book.

Booking with the cruise line vs a private shore excursion

Cruise-line excursion Private excursion
Group size Coach groups, often 30–45 people Your group only
Pace Fixed; waits for the whole group Set by you and the guide
If the ship is late The ship waits for its own tours These two tours: full refund if the ship is delayed or misses the port; the operator plans around your all-aboard time
Price Per person, usually higher Per person; often cheaper for 2 or more people

The cruise-line guarantee matters most when the port day is short. For a full port day in Istanbul or Kuşadası, a private tour with a guide who tracks your ship’s schedule is a sound choice. Give the operator your ship name and port date when you book.

What one port day cannot cover

A day in port shows you the highlights, but it leaves out most of Turkey. Cappadocia, Pamukkale and the Seven Churches of Revelation are all inland, too far for a shore day. If your cruise begins or ends in Istanbul, you can add a few days on land. See our 7-day Turkey itinerary, the Seven Churches route, or build your own trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Istanbul?

At Galataport in Karaköy, on the European side of the Bosphorus. Ships dock at the pier, and you leave through an underground terminal. The Old City (Sultanahmet) is about 15 minutes away by the T1 tram from Tophane.

How far is Ephesus from Kuşadası cruise port?

About 20 km (12 miles), or roughly 30 minutes by road. The House of the Virgin Mary is about 10 minutes beyond Ephesus. You cannot walk there from the port.

Do US cruise passengers need a visa for Turkey?

No. US citizens can visit Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 days, so you do not need a visa for a port day (details on our Turkey visa page). Bring your passport; the cruise line will tell you whether to carry it ashore.

What happens if my ship is late or skips the port?

For the two private shore excursions on this page, the operator refunds the tour in full if your ship is delayed or misses the port. It also tracks your ship’s arrival and all-aboard times and plans the day around them.

Are these shore excursions suitable for travelers with limited mobility?

The Ephesus tour is not suitable for wheelchair users: the site has about 2 miles of uneven stone paths. The Istanbul tour uses the tram and includes a lot of walking. Contact us and we will suggest a shorter or adapted day.
