Turkey Itinerary for 7 Days: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale
Quick answer: The classic 7-day Turkey itinerary is 2 nights in Istanbul, 1 to 2 nights in Cappadocia, 2 nights near Ephesus and a day at Pamukkale, linked by three short domestic flights. It covers the four places most first-time visitors want to see. It is a full week; for a slower pace, drop Pamukkale or add a night.
The 7-day route at a glance
This is the route of our 7-day private Turkey highlights tour, and it works just as well if you plan it yourself. The order matters: flying Istanbul to Cappadocia, Cappadocia to İzmir, and Denizli back to Istanbul avoids every long drive.
| Day | Night in | What you see | Travel that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Istanbul | Arrive and settle into Sultanahmet. Evening Bosphorus cruise. | Airport to old city: about 1 hour by car |
| Day 2 | Istanbul | Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Harem, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, the Grand Bazaar. | On foot in the old city |
| Day 3 | Cappadocia | Early flight. Uçhisar Castle, Red Valley walk, Çavuşin, Kaymaklı Underground City, Pigeon Valley. | Flight about 1h15-1h30 |
| Day 4 | Kuşadası | Optional sunrise balloon flight. Göreme Open Air Museum, Avanos, Paşabağ. Afternoon flight to İzmir. | Flight to İzmir, then about 1 hour by road |
| Day 5 | Kuşadası | Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis site, the House of the Virgin Mary, Selçuk. | Kuşadası to Ephesus: about 20 minutes |
| Day 6 | Istanbul | Pamukkale travertines and Hierapolis. Evening flight from Denizli to Istanbul. | Selçuk to Pamukkale: 2-3 hours by road |
| Day 7 | Home | Transfer to the airport for your flight home. | About 1 hour to the airport |
Count two extra days for the trip from the US: most flights leave in the evening and land in Istanbul the next day, and the flight home leaves the same day you finish. Nonstop flights from New York take about 10 hours.
Days 1-2: Istanbul
Stay in Sultanahmet, the old city, so that Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Blue Mosque are a short walk from your hotel. On the arrival day, rest and keep the evening light: a Bosphorus cruise is the easiest way to see the city’s two shores without walking.
Day 2 is the big one. Start at Hagia Sophia when it opens, then spend about two hours in Topkapı Palace, including the Harem. In the afternoon, visit the Blue Mosque outside prayer times, walk the Hippodrome and finish in the Grand Bazaar. Dress for mosques: shoulders and knees covered, and a scarf for women. Our Istanbul guide covers tickets and timing.
Days 3-4: Cappadocia
Take the earliest flight you can to Nevşehir or Kayseri; Göreme is about 40 minutes by road from Nevşehir and about 75 minutes from Kayseri. Spend the first afternoon on a valley walk, Red Valley or Love Valley, and go underground at Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu. Sleep in a cave hotel.
The next morning is your balloon chance. Flights leave around sunrise and are cancelled when the wind is too strong, which is why two nights in Cappadocia give you a second try. Read our hot air balloon guide before you book one. After breakfast, see the frescoed rock churches of the Göreme Open Air Museum, then fly to İzmir in the afternoon.
Day 5: Ephesus
Base yourself in Kuşadası or Selçuk, 20 minutes from Ephesus. Arrive at the site early: the marble streets reflect the heat by midday from June to September. Walk from the upper gate down Curetes Street to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater, where Paul’s opponents rioted in Acts 19 (see Paul in Ephesus). The Terrace Houses need a separate ticket and about an hour. Add the House of the Virgin Mary and the site of the Temple of Artemis.
Day 6: Pamukkale and the flight back
Drive inland about 2 to 3 hours to Pamukkale. Walk barefoot on the white travertine terraces, then explore Hierapolis, the Roman spa city above them, with its theater and its necropolis. Swimming in Cleopatra’s Pool is optional and has its own ticket. Denizli airport is about an hour away, with evening flights to Istanbul.
Is this pace right for you?
This route is busy: three flights and four regions in a week. It suits travelers who want to see the headline sights on a first trip and who are comfortable with early starts. It is less suited to travelers who want time to wander, or who walk slowly; see our guide to Turkey with limited mobility.
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| The same four regions with more breathing room | 8-day tour or 8-day tour with Konya |
| Two regions at an easy pace | 6-day Istanbul and Cappadocia |
| A Bible-focused week | 5-day Seven Churches from Istanbul plus Istanbul |
| Fewer days | Short trips of 3 to 6 days |
| Ten days or more | How many days in Turkey compares 10- and 14-day routes |
Doing it yourself or with a private guide
You can book the flights, hotels and site tickets yourself, and many travelers do. The hard parts are the connections: airport transfers in three regions, a car or driver for Pamukkale, and timing Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and Ephesus to avoid the worst crowds. A private guide and driver take care of all of that and explain what you are looking at. A group coach tour costs less per day but runs on its own schedule; we compare the options in private vs. group tours and give real prices in how much a private tour of Turkey costs.
When to go matters as much as the route. April to early June and September to October are the most comfortable months; see the best time to visit Turkey. Lunch stops on this route are a good chance to try regional food; our guide to what to eat in Turkey lists what to order where.

Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for Turkey?
Seven days is enough to see Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale if you use three domestic flights, but the pace is brisk. If you prefer a slower week, choose two regions, Istanbul and Cappadocia, or add one more night and take an 8-day route.
What is the best order for a 7-day Turkey itinerary?
Start in Istanbul, fly to Cappadocia, fly to İzmir for Ephesus, visit Pamukkale on the way back, and fly from Denizli to Istanbul for your flight home. This order avoids the 7 to 8 hour drive between Pamukkale and Cappadocia.
How many days should I spend in Istanbul?
Plan at least one full touring day for the old city, which covers Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. Two full days let you add a Bosphorus cruise, the Spice Bazaar and the neighborhoods beyond Sultanahmet.
Can I do this 7-day itinerary without a guide?
Yes, but the flights, transfers and site timing take careful planning, and several sites have no explanation on the ground. A private guide and driver remove the logistics and let you see more in the same time; independent travel costs less.
